This paper examines the relationship between traditional filmography—the structured, chronological list of a director’s or actor’s cinematic works—and the contemporary phenomenon of “popular videos” (user-generated content, clips, and mashups) on digital platforms. It argues that while filmography represents a vertical, author-driven history of cinema, popular videos constitute a horizontal, audience-driven network of cultural memory. Through analysis of remediation, database aesthetics, and algorithmic curation, this paper posits that popular videos do not undermine cinematic filmography but rather extend its lifespan, create new archival logics, and democratize film criticism.
