Neerja discreetly informed the passengers that they were in grave danger and that they should be prepared to make a quick exit. She also helped to hide the passports of some of the American passengers, which the hijackers were demanding, in order to prevent them from being identified and targeted.

On September 5, 1986, Neerja was working on Pan Am Flight 73, a Boeing 747 aircraft that was flying from Karachi, Pakistan to Mumbai, India with 396 passengers and crew members on board. The flight was scheduled to make a stop in Mumbai, but it never got that far. The hijacking lasted for 17 hours, during which time the hijackers killed one passenger, Robert Stethem, a 22-year-old American serviceman.
